AREAS OF EMPHASIS

In addition to general injury prevention, the faculty and staff at the Center for Injury Research and Policy (CIRP) have interests that span the spectrum of injury research. Listed here are the areas of emphasis for CIRP. Visit the Publications Library and sort by category to find peer-reviewed publications from each of our areas of emphasis.

DISABILITY-RELATED INJURY RESEARCH
Currently, 40 to 50 million people in the United States live with a variety of disabilities, and this number is expected to increase substantially in coming years. Individuals with disabilities are believed to face a higher injury risk than their healthy counterparts due to deficiencies in gait/motor control, impairments in mental processing and an inability to adjust to their environment.

Researchers at the Center for Injury Research and Policy recognize that there is a critical need to better understand the factors that influence the occurrence of injuries among individuals with disabilities, to identify injury patterns and to investigate the medical costs of these injuries. Our goal is to help minimize injury risk and promote safe community participation for individuals with disabilities in the United States.

HOME SAFETY
In 2008, the Center for Injury Research and Policy (CIRP) established the Home Safety Program to focus on the leading causes of injury in and around the home. Researchers at CIRP are working to prevent home injuries by translating original research into innovative interventions and public policy changes.
INTERNATIONAL INJURY RESEARCH
Each year, there are more than 800,000 injury deaths globally among children younger than 18 years of age, and 90% of these deaths are due to unintentional injuries. Tens of millions of children require hospital care
annually due to injuries. However, most of these injuries are preventable. Our investigators research injury internationally through collaborative partnerships with academic centers in other countries with the goal of reducing injury-related death and disabilities worldwide.

The International Program at the Center for Injury Research and Policy (CIRP) was established in 2004 to enhance global scientific exchange and promote injury research, especially in the developing world. CIRP collaborates with Tongji Medical College (People's Republic of China, 2005), Wuhan Medical and Health Center for Women and Children (People's Republic of China, 2006) and the Child Safety Promotion and Injury Prevention Research Center (Thailand, 2006).

SPORTS INJURIES
Our researchers at the Center for Injury Research and Policy explore the epidemiology of sports, recreation and leisure activity-related injuries among children and adolescents. To combat the epidemic of obesity in our country, we encourage children to participate in physically active sports, recreation and leisure activities. However, a certain endemic level of injury is expected in any physical activity. The challenge is to: investigate the etiology of preventable injuries; develop, implement and evaluate protective interventions; and responsibly report epidemiologic findings of injury research while promoting a physically active lifestyle for children and adolescents.

Our research on sports injuries covers a wide range of activities. Click on the links below to learn about one of our featured programs.
